Decking Auckland, timber and composite decks, built to last.

A good deck doubles the size of your house in summer. A bad one rots in five years and traps water against your weatherboards. The difference is the build: sub-frame, joists, drainage, fixings, finish, down to the finishing touches.

Timber decking Auckland

Kwila, vitex, garapa, pine.

ForknHoe builds decking using materials we’d happily use on our own homes. Timber options we work with most often: kwila, vitex, garapa and pine H4. Kwila and vitex hold up beautifully but want a wash and oil every couple of years. Pine H4 is more budget-friendly and works well with a yearly stain. We help you choose the timber that suits the deck, the section and the maintenance you’re willing to do.

Modern, low-maintenance, lasting.

Our composite decking is built for Auckland conditions, offering the look of timber with 20+ years of low-maintenance performance. While the upfront cost is higher, many homeowners find it pays for itself in time and upkeep saved.

Building consents for decking Auckland sites

What you need to know.

If your deck is more than 1.5m off the ground, the decking Auckland Council inspects needs a building consent (and a balustrade). Most ground-floor decks don’t, but it’s worth checking – Auckland Council has quirks. We handle the consent for any deck build that needs it.

Decking lifespan

Lifespan and maintenance.

  • Pine H4: 15+ years if looked after, with annual staining
  • Kwila / vitex: 20-30 years with a wash and oil every 2-3 years
  • Composite: 25+ years with effectively zero maintenance
  • The substructure (joists, bearers) typically outlasts the top – we use H4 framing as standard

What decking Auckland projects cost

Rough numbers, per square metre.

Deck cost is driven by timber choice, deck height and levels, sub-frame complexity, and finish. In relative order from most economical to most premium: pine H4, garapa, kwila, vitex, then composite. A piled subframe (needed on sloped sites) adds a separate cost line that we detail in the quote.

As a relative guide per square metre installed: pine H4 is the most economical option. Kwila, vitex and garapa sit in the mid-range and vary by species availability. Composite decking sits at the top of the range. The bigger cost driver on most jobs is the sub-frame – flat sites with straightforward footings cost significantly less than sloped sites needing piles.
