How a design begins
Four stages, in collaboration.
01
Brief.
We visit. You tell us how you want to live in the garden – entertaining, gardening, kids, dogs, pool, sunset views. We leave you with a written brief that captures what you said.
02
Site analysis.
Soil, slope, sun, shade, drainage, prevailing winds, existing trees, council constraints, views. The constraints are the design – get them wrong and the plants won’t thrive, the deck will rot, the wall will fail.
03
Concept.
A concept plan, two-to-three options if you’d like. Materials boards. Indicative pricing. We walk you through it; you tell us what you love and what to change.
04
Detailed plan.
The drawings that get built. Dimensions, levels, specifications – a full plan ready to build.
Garden design Auckland
When planting leads the brief.
Sometimes the work is a garden design that genuinely benefits from planting leading the brief – restoring a native bush edge, planning an edible-led masterplan, refreshing an established home’s planting before anything else changes. Same process as the bigger design, different emphasis. The site, soil and microclimate still set the rules.
Landscape architects Auckland
From design to Auckland council consents and approval.
Whether your project requires a straightforward landscape design or a more complex, consent-driven solution, we provide the right expertise at every stage. For larger public or commercial developments, we collaborate with NZILA-registered landscape architects where required, while leading the design ourselves on projects where it’s the most appropriate approach. We also manage the entire consent process—including building and resource consents, council documentation and communication ensuring your project progresses smoothly from initial concept through to construction.
Pricing tiers
What landscape design costs in Auckland?
Most residential landscape designs sit in three rough tiers: small refresh, mid-size garden, and full property. We can provide a quote after a site visit and a chat.
Design-led value
Why design-led builds save you money?
A $5K design typically saves $30K-$50K in build-stage rework, material substitutions, and rushed decisions. The numbers really do work that way.
Sample plans
What you actually get on paper?
We can show anonymised concept-plan and planting-plan extracts so you understand exactly what you’d receive at each design stage – a residential concept plan, a detailed masterplan with materials schedule, and a planting plan with species call-outs.

Design FAQs.
What is landscape design?
Landscape design is the plan for how your outdoor space will look, function and grow in. It covers concept design (the big picture), detailed masterplan (every wall, path and bed dimensioned), planting plan (species, positions, quantities), lighting plan, irrigation plan, and any Auckland Council consents needed. It’s the plan the builder works from.
How much does landscape design cost in Auckland?
Most residential landscape designs in Auckland sit in three rough tiers: small refresh, mid-size garden, or full property. Your design fee comes off the build cost if you build with us. The first conversation and site visit are always free.
What's the difference between a landscape designer and a landscape architect?
For most residential and small-commercial projects, a designer is the right level of expertise. Larger consent-driven work (public realm, big commercial, complex civil-scale sites) sometimes needs a registered NZILA landscape architect. We handle designer-level work ourselves and collaborate with architects when the project genuinely needs one.
Do I need a landscape design before starting the build?
Yes, even if you only think you need a build. A $5K design typically saves $30K to $50K in build-stage rework, material substitutions and rushed decisions. A garden is easier to change on paper than in concrete.
How long does the landscape design process take?
Usually 4 to 8 weeks from first site visit to detailed plan. We work through it in four stages: brief, site analysis, concept, detailed plan. You review and adjust at each stage. Nothing is locked in until you sign off.
Do you handle Auckland Council consents?
Yes. Most landscape design projects in Auckland need at least one form of consent. Building consent for structures over 1.5m, resource consent for stormwater changes, sometimes both. We handle lodgement, the back-and-forth, and the documentation so you don’t have to.
What's included in a landscape design deliverable?
Concept plan, detailed masterplan, planting plan, lighting plan, irrigation plan, materials schedule, and any Auckland Council consent paperwork. All drawings are dimensioned and specified so a builder (us, ideally) can quote from them accurately.
